2023’s Apple MacBook Pro 16in update is both surprising and expected. Apple caught all of us cold by announcing it, along with an updated 14in MacBook Pro and Mac mini (reviews of those next month), via a couple of press releases at the tail end of January. A glamorous launch at the company’s Cupertino headquarters this was not.

While the timing and manner of the launch was surprising, the fact that Apple was updating 2021’s critically acclaimed MacBook Pro 16in (see issue 321, p61) wasn’t. With the launch of the M2 chip last year, it was only a matter of time before we saw the more powerful M2 Pro and M2 Max.
