If you’re a Bowie fan, you might remember the iconic speech he gave at his final Ziggy gig, as captured in grainy Technicolor by D A Pennebaker. He said, “Of all the shows on this tour, this particular show will remain with us the longest, because not only is it the last show of the tour, it’s also the last show that we’ll ever do.” Well, I’m writing this at the end of 2022, and I can’t help but feel a bit like Bowie in that moment, because not only is this is the last column I’ll write this year, it’s also the last RWC column I’ll ever write.
It’s an entirely voluntary and amicable decision. I hit 60 during 2022, and suddenly realised that I could now afford to retire. Actually, there’s more to it than that – the first thing I realised is just how much I loathed deadlines. Editor Tim has the patience of a saint but I’m sure he won’t miss having to chase me every month because my copy is late.
My company, CST Group, has moved on, too. One of my employees is now the sole custodian, and as a result it will be moving on to bigger and better things. Again, that’s more deadlines gone for me. No more financial reports, accounting stuff, project meetings or whatever. I’m aiming for a simpler, quieter life.
