Like herring in the water

The barnacle geese sound like a thousand barking dogs coming our way. We’re well camouflaged, hidden in the high golden grass along the edge of the dried-out waterhole, as the approaching birds head towards the decoys. Before Danish hunters were given the chance to apply for cull licences for this species, the birds did not show any signs of anxiety when approaching people or decoys. Now, it’s a whole new story.

As the geese come closer, they circle a couple of times. Two drop out of the group and head for the decoys. This is a great opportunity. Rule changes in Denmark in the past five years mean barnacle geese can be shot over fields where they damage crops. But
