COINS OF THE FATIMIDS

he Fatimid dynasty ruled across the Mediterranean coast of Africa and made Egypt the heart of their Caliphate. At its height, the territories belonging to Fatimids included areas of the Maghreb, Sudan, Sicily, the Levant, and the Hijaz. Fatimids trace their name and ancestry to Muhammad’s daughter Fatima. Her father, the Prophet, described her as his dearest person and she is widely considered a role model in compassion and generosity. At the moment, coins of the Fatimids are one of the most popular areas of Islamic coinage. These beautiful coins were minted from 10th to 12th century. Fatimid coinage can be divided into two categories (according to Nicol): the gold Dinar and its fractions and the silver Dirham and its fractions and multiples.
