y the early 1890s, Ida B. Wells had discovered a passion for journalism. She had established herself as a fearless reporter and editor in Memphis, Tennessee. She seemed to prove the familiar saying, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” Black women in the late 1800s generally did not have the power to enact social or political change. But as a journalist, Wells used her pen as a sword to attack issues about which she was passionate. She became a champion for African Americans and against injustice toward them.
