The U.S. and the Philippines agree to a larger American military presence
The Department of Defense announced the move that is widely seen as a way to deter China's influence in the region amid a visit to the Philippines by U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

The U.S. will expand its presence in Southeast Asia with access to more bases in the Philippines, the two countries announced Thursday.
"American commitment to the defense of the Philippines is ironclad. Our alliance makes both of our democracies more secure and helps uphold a free and open Indo-Pacific," Austin said during a press conference on Thursday afternoon
