GOUDMYN RIVER CHALETS Good as gold
The Cape isn't synonymous with gold mines – the nearest one is in the Free State, more than 1 000 km away, after all When you come across a campsite here that's called Goudmyn (translated from Afrikaans as “gold mine”), you have to wonder about its origin.
Back in the day, someone apparently paid a whopping £2 400 for a large piece of property outside Robertson. An unknown commentor who couldn't believe the price apparently said the new owner had just paid a gold mine's price for the land. The land has been subdivided over time, and changed ownership, but you can still camp at Goudmyn River Chalets today
The campsite is 11 km outside Robertson, and while you come to relax, the farm work does not stop. As you turn in at the gate, an orchard of colombard grapes is to your left, and a littlg farther on an orchard of eureka lemons. This is fertile soil –
