THE VENICE VAMPIRE

The island of Lazzaretto Nuovo, which lies around two miles northeast of Venice, was used from 1468 as a quarantine area for sailors arriving from potentially infected lands. During the major pandemics that struck the city in the 16th and 17th centuries, the island became a hospital for those affected by plague, and mass graves were dug for the patients that died. From 2006 to 2008, Matteo was the director of the excavation of the cemetery area of the island used for the pandemics of 1576 (in which the artist Titian died) and 1630. During this project].
