There’s a simple reason why Citizen Sleeper relies so heavily on dice rolls: Gareth Damian Martin discovered tabletop RPGs while developing their previous game, In Other Waters. Martin became interested in the hobby after listening to podcasts such as Friends At The Table, and a visit from their younger brother provided the perfect excuse to try running an RPG for the first time. One trip to Forbidden Planet later, Martin was the proud owner of Blades In The Dark, an urban fantasy game that takes place in perpetual night, in a fictional city inspired by Victorian London. As gamemaster, Martin revelled in the improvisational storytelling that Blades In The Dark provided, with relatively simple rules yet deep potential for character building. “I just immediately fell in love with GMing,” Martin says. “The way in which it activates your brain. I guess it maybe connects to the fact that I trained in theatre.”
A key mechanic in Blades In The Dark is stress, which can be taken on to improve the chances of an action succeeding but must later be alleviated through indulging the character’s vice – whether that’s drink, drugs or something else.
