Here's an easy pattern anyone can make. The hat is not only easy to knit, but also elegant to look at. It has fine bands of lace knitting and a broad ribbed cuff that you can turn back if you wish – in a soft, non-scratchy alpaca blend.

TOP-DOWN SWEATER

A cool and casual sweater gets an added dash of creative style when you knit it in a lovely tweedy yarn. This yarn has fine flecks on a fiery orange background, and the sweater is knitted with a fine lace pattern running along the raglan and side seams.

Materials:

Lana Grossa, Lala Berlin Brushy.
Content: 42 % superkid mohair, 38 % merino wool, 20 % polyamide.
50 g = 135 m.
7 (8) balls – col 07 beige

Knitting needles:

Size 5½ and 6 mm
Circular needle size 5½ mm (50 cm)

Crochet hook:

Size 5½ mm

Tension:

On size 6 mm needles: 11 sts and 30 rows = 10 x 10 cm in brioche rib chart A.

11 sts and 28 rows = 10 x 10 cm in main patt chart B.

When only one figure is given, it applies to both sizes.

Selvage stitches: On every row: SI first st kwise, k last st.

Rib patt: K2, p2.

Chart A/B: Numbers at left edge of chart indicate WS rows, numbers at right edge of chart indicate RS rows. Work to patt rep, work 4 sts between arrows for patt rep, work to end of chart.

For brioche rib, work rows 1 – 3 of chart A once, then rep rows 2 and 3.

For main patt, rep rows 1 – 12 of chart B.

Note: sts are shown from the side of work they are knitted.

Full-fashion increase: On RS row: M1L (= lift strand between sts from the front, knit through back loop of this strand), 1 st in from each edge.

BACK

Cast on 69 (73) sts 6mm needles. Beg and end with a WS row work in brioche rib according to chart A for 45 rows and piece measures 15 cm from cast-on.

Work in main patt according to chart B for 28 rows = 10 cm.

Shape armholes: Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

[Work 2 rows even, cast off 1 st at beg of next 2 rows] 8 times = 49 (53) sts.

Cont in patt until a total of 84 (88) rows has been worked from beg of armhole shaping and armhole measures 30 (31) cm.

Shape shoulders and neck: At each shoulder edge bind off 4 (3) sts 1 time, 3 (4) sts 3 times.

At same time, on first row of shoulder shaping, shape neck as foll: Cast off center 13 sts. Working each side separately, bind off 3 sts at each neck edge 1 time, 2 sts 1 time. No sts rem.

FRONT

Work same as back until a total of 68 (72) rows has been worked from beg of armhole shaping and armhole measures 24 (25) cm.

Shape neck: Next row (RS): Cast off center 11 sts.

Working each side separately, bind off 3 sts at each neck edge 1 time, 2 sts 1 time, 1 st 1 time and when same length as back to shoulders, shape shoulders same as for back.

SLEEVES

Cast on 34 sts using 5½ mm needles.

Next row (WS): Selvage st, p1, * k2, p2; rep from * to last 4 sts, k2, p1, selvage st.

Work in rib patt as set by last row for a total of 19 rows = 8 cm, decreasing 1 st at end of last WS row = 33 sts.

Change to 6mm needles. Work in main patt according to chart B and shape sleeve as toll: working full-fashion inc, inc 1 st at each end of 3rd row, then every 6th row 11 (12) times = 57 (59) sts.

Work increased sts into patt, Cont until a total of 78 rows has been worked in main patt and piece meas 28 cm from end of rib patt.

Shape sleeve cap: Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

[Work 2 rows even, cast off 1 st at beg of next 2 rows] 7 times.

[Work 4 rows even, cast off 1 st at beg of next 2 rows] 3 times.

[Work 2 rows even, bind off 1 st at beg of next 2 rows] 8 times.

Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows.

Cast off rem 9 (11) sts.

FINISHING

Pin pieces to measurements and block.

Sew shoulder seams.

Neckband: With 5½mm circular needle, pick up and k 76 sts evenly around neck edge.

Place beg of rnd marker and join for working in rnds.

Work rib patt in rnds for 4 cm.

Cast off all sts in rib.

Sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.

With a 5mm crochet hook, work 1 round sl st around armholes.

3 balls – col 316 violet
2 balls – col 314 pink
2 balls – col 319 red
2 balls – col 303 camel
2 balls – col 301 off white
2 balls – col 318 light blue

Knitting needles:

Size 3 and 4½ mm

Circular needle size 3 mm (50 cm)

Tension:

20 sts and 31 rows = 10 x 10 cm in St st, rev St st and seed st on size 4½ mm needles.

Selvage stitches: On every row: SI first st kwise, k last st.

Rib patt: K1, p1.

St st: K on RS, p on WS.

Rev St st: P on RS, k on WS.

Seed stitch: Row 1: K1, p1.

Row 2: Purl the knit sts and knit the purl sts.

Rep row 2 for seed st.

Patchwork patt: Worked in St st, rev St st and seed st and Intarsia technique. Work each block of colour with separate ball of yarn. Twist yarns around each other at each colour change to prevent holes. Work each block over 29 sts and 42 rows or as given in instructions. Work first and last st of each block in St st.

Letters and numbers on schematic indicate stitch patt and col used: A = St st; B = rev St st; C = seed st. = off white; = camel; = pink; = violet; = light blue; = red; = yellow.
