MAY 2009: FIRST EVER MINECRAFT RELEASES
Inspired by a game called ‘Infiniminer’, developer Notch publicly released his own game, called
Minecraft, on 17th May 2009. This would become the Java Edition and the first version is said to have taken one weekend to code! From this point on, Minecraft would enter a phase of releases and upgrades that continue to this day – you can still play many of them!
JUNE 2009: ON SALE
The positive response to the game led Notch to put the initial version on sale so he could start to develop it full-time. The first copy was sold on 13th June 2009. 1,000 were sold within a month, while around 20,000 people had registered to play the free version.
DECEMBER 2010: FIRST BETA RELEASE
