First signs of spring, and the occasional ‘warm for the time of year’ sunny day, can create the urge to get gardening. It’s surprising how strong February sunshine can feel, but it is wintertime still, most of the garden is dormant and the ground cold and damp.

I enjoy seeing gardening social media posts. It’s delightful to share with others their enthusiasm and joy for growing but every year, at this time of year, a few dread ed “you must sow now” posts appear online. These can create the impression that there’s some kind of rush, the illusion that it will be too late to grow a harvest if all is not accomplished “now”.
