A new addition to Nigel Welbourn’s popular Lost Railways series for Ian Allan and Crecy is always something to look out for, and this one covers a vast subject in Ms usual factfilled and pleasantly written style.

Of course it can’t be totally comprehensive, but Nigel has a good stab at all the continents and islands, and comes up with remarkable anecdotes that are certainly new to this reviewer.

How many of us have been on holiday to the Azores, for example, and been oblivious to the existence of a British-built locomotive that was built to Brunel’s Great Western 7ft broad gauge?

The lost railways that are depicted are generally the victims of road competition, earthquakes and hurricanes, wars
