The ozone layer’s recovery

YOU might have heard your parents and other adults talk about “the hole in the ozone layer”. The UNITED NATIONS (UN) has now released a report saying the ozone layer might be mostly recovered within the next 20 years.

But how did the hole come to be? And how has it recovered?

The ozone layer is a thin layer of Earth’s atmosphere which deflects most of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. It protects us from most of the damage these rays can do, including sunburn, cancer and damage to our DNA. The ozone layer is almost like a layer of sunscreen for the planet.

In 1985 scientists discovered a huge hole in the ozone layer. The hole had been caused by chemical substances which used to be common in spray cans, fridges and air conditioners.
