THE LONG ROAD HOME

‘Mom, there's a reindeer!’ I wouldn't have questioned this, had we been somewhere near the Arctic Circle. Except we weren't This was the Eastern Cape.

I strained my neck to see. It did look just like a reindeer. But we were on a remote gravel road somewhere in the Eastern Cape farmlands… a reindeer didn't seem like the most suitable candidate for these conditions. It was then that a self-righteous feeling hit me - this is why we decided to hit the back roads after our recent trip to Kruger. We wanted to show the children the South Africa far from the asphalt and exhaust fumes of the N1.

After six far-too-short days in Kruger, we took the highway to Bloemfontein. A long day in the car with much moaning about sore legs and bums… and that was just my husband. The children were no longer distracted
