STEP BY STEP Lift and divide clumps of snowdrops

As snowdrop flowers fade, spread the plants through borders by dividing large, established clumps and then replanting them. Division also helps to keep the plants flowering reliably. They do best in moisture-retentive soil and in shade or part shade. Snowdrops are a perfect partner for summer-interest plants because they lay dormant and don’t mind being shaded by foliage through the summer.

1 STEP into the border, avoiding damaging nearby plants. Push a fork in under the clump and lift the whole lot out of the border onto a tarpaulin so that it’s easy to clean up the soil and debris afterwards.

2 PULL the clump apart by the handful. Support the bulk of the bulbs as you pull them away,
