“Most of these plants are happy in pots, balconies or windowsills, or can be grown with others in a garden border”
Knowing how to dye cloth is an essential skill for all textile artists but it was only after accidentally spilling some strong hibiscus tea – which, I discovered, has great staining power – on a t-shirt that I became curious about natural dyes. I began experimenting with food waste, saving things like onion and avocado skins to create colourful hues, before moving on to explore how plants could be a source of dyes for many of my projects. Combining my love for growing plants in the garden and my passion for sewing in the studio, I’ve started my own dyer’s garden at home, giving me an endless supply of pigments.
