TWENTY-four-hour turnout during the winter months brings many advantages for horses and their keepers - a chance for horses to socialise in a herd rather than live in solitary confinement, a lower risk of colic, and the labour-saving benefits of managing horses in a group rather than singly.
But it also presents challenges. These include increased risk of injury, the requirement for the horses - and their keepers to cope with adverse weather, and the necessity to ensure the individual and often diverse needs of each horse are met in a herd situation.
