As with any press launch, MG Rover had quite a few MGFs A lined up for eager journalists to try when the mid-engined, K-series-powered MGF was released to the world. This Flame Red example hit the hallowed pages of Autocar, in test no. 4152, on 20th September 1995.

Highlights included the “clever” styling, engineering integrity, huge grip, superb brakes and exceptional build quality. In retrospect, not all of this panned out so well in the short term for owners but, as we know, over the years its little foibles can be ironed out when taken to a specialist.

Amazingly, MG kept hold of this particular press car until 1998, when it was sold to this very magazine, under the Editorship of Martyn Wise, noting it was
