Archaeological work at Caerlaverock Old Castle near Dumfries in 1998 and 1999 found three fragments of Islamic glass, which date to the 12th or 13th century. Glass was very rare in Scotland at this time, and the fragments bear inscriptions in Arabic. The beaker they came from must have travelled a very long way.
