2013 DEVON TEMPEST

We started motorhoming 20 years ago and have never looked back. Over 1,521 camping nights later, we've travelled throughout Europe, as well as England, Wales and Scotland.

We've had big (Bessacarr E725), medium (Autocruise Starburst) and small (VW Auto-Sleeper Trident T4 and T5) ’vans. The last two have been from Devon Conversions and based on Renault Masters: a Limousin and now a Tempest.

The Tempest is on the MWB Renault Master with a 2.3-litre, 125bhp engine and a six-speed gearbox measuring just 5.55 metres. Talk about a quart in a pint pot.

We often scratch our heads and marvel at how it is possible to sleep so well, do one's ablutions, cook a gourmet meal and see the wonders of the world – well, Europe at least – in such a small box! It should have been called the Tardis not the Tempest!

With the bigger 'vans, we found the stress of getting stuck in towns, low-lying bridges or byways not what we wanted and, frankly, the VWs are too small other than for short trips.

The Starburst was great, but I preferred the solidity of the nonfibreglass body and discovered that the Tempest met our needs perfectly.
