The Setesdals Railway was a 78km long, 3foot 6inch (1067mm) gauge line built between Kristiansand and Byglandsfjord. The first part opened in 1895 and the line was opened throughout in 1896, and has just celebrated its 125th Anniversary. At Byglandsjord it connected with boats on the 34km long lake to form an extended transport system. The 3foot 6inch gauge was extensively used in Norway and until 1938 this railway was unconnected with any other. The light axle load on the line required bespoke locomotives and these were of two, similar designs, built by Dubs in Glasgow. Locomotives 1 and 2 were 2-6-2s with 914mm driving wheels and small side tanks and back tanks under the bunker. These locomotives were intended principallylarge that they needed bracing struts to the smokebox.
