Harry and Sheila Collen both loved children and desperately wanted one of their own. Harry was the typical rough diamond. His handshake was like a vice. I couldn’t imagine anyone but Sheila taming him. She understood him. She allowed him to be the head of the family. However, we knew she was the neck that turned the head.
The years passed, but Sheila never fell pregnant. We did laboratory investigations, blood tests, X-rays, specialists’ examinations and consulted with the best fertility experts. After trying and trying and taking all the scientific evidence into consideration, I told them they would never have children of their own. They were devastated. I suggested adoption, but it was difficult.
The adoption process was controlled by the Department of Social Welfare.
