Bikes of Burden: Hans Kemp

“Each of the images depicts a scooter being used in the most extraordinary way, with everything from livestock to ladders being transported through bustling streets”

enthusiasts the scooter is an object of veneration but for most of the world it’s simply a tool to be used, and often abused, as the circumstances require. Award-winning Dutchare posed and anyone who has visited Vietnam can confirm that most of the images could be taken at any time, on any day in any Vietnamese town or city. Notwithstanding the candid nature of Hans’ photography the images are crisp and beautifully composed; some of his subjects clearly enjoy being the centre of attention while others look less pleased. Each of the images depicts a scooter being used in the most extraordinary way, with everything from livestock to ladders being transported through bustling streets without the rider having a care in the world. There is a word of warning. As the cover hints, this is a warts and all account of how scooters are used.
