ASK AN EXPERT

Q.Can I work out when I’m sick?

You can, but you probably shouldn’t. Typically, we distinguish between “above be doing HIIT. “Below the neck” means you should only be doing light activity, like a walk or an easy bike ride. Major red flags for exercise include irregular heartbeat and shortness of breath. Do not do anything when you feel these; see a doctor immediately. Working out is always a stress to the system—that’s how we adapt and get stronger. If your system is already under stress, working out will not help you feel better. Taking a day off from training when you’re sick, however, is never going to hurt your body or your long-term progress.
