Apples

The apple tree (species Malus domestica belonging to the Rose family) is one of the most widely grown domesticated trees. It is believed to have originated in western Asia but there are now more than 7500 cultivars of this deciduous tree grown around the world and more than 69 million tons of apples are produced every year.

In Australia, there are approximately 12 million apple trees, each one producing about 27kg of apples per season. Some common varieties are Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Pink Lady, Jonathan, gala and Fuji. All apples
