Book of the month
Everything about this book is big. Huge. From its weight (26kg for the five volumes in their slipcase) to the full title, which is A Quiet Greatness: Japan’s Most Astonishing Automobiles for the Collector and Enthusiast. What it is? It is a love letter to Japanese cars that was six years in the making by two of the most intensely devoted enthusiasts on the planet.
Bonneville addict Mark Brinker’s name might be familiar to readers from his articles on the Pontiac Vivant, Fageol Supersonic and, most recently, the Strother MacMinn Le Mans Coupe concept. His partner in crime here is Myron Vernis, previously the pontiff of rare and obscure Porsches, now more the king of all the quirky with his love of engineering weirdness such as the Paxton Phoenix steam car (although it is actually Porsche-powered) and Hoffman X8 (yes, an X engine configuration), both of which have appeared at Pebble Beach.
