Glamour Road: Color, Fashion, Style, and the Mid-Century Automobile

Call it serendipity, if you like. During a recent Octane road trip through California, we were very kindly allowed to shoot an amazing 1960s car outside the equally amazing Palm Springs Mid-Century home of resident Tom Dolle. And Tom, who is a graphic designer, just happens to have recently co-produced this new book charting the way fashion dovetailed with car design from the 1950s and through the ’60s.

His co-author, Jeff Stork, is the ultimate car guy; he was brought up in Flint, Michigan, and had a long-term career in GM corporate sales. Their collaboration has resulted in a fabulous book packed with contemporary advertising, all painstakingly retouched, descreened and colour-corrected to present it as the original artists intended.

The book begins with an overview of America’s post-war revival, in particular the expansion of the suburbs. There’s a brief look at interior design, too: in 1953

I’ve met a lot of the great car designers, but I never met Marcello Gandini. Although I did very nearly meet him… in a Milan court. Gandini famously had what you might call an artistic temperament and he was apparently inclined to go to law over any
