RHUBARD SEASON BY SEASON

For the second in our series of A Year of Growing Fruit, we’re going to look at… a vegetable! Although technically not a fruit, as it’s the fleshy stalks which are eaten, rhubarb is generally used as a fruit, and is an important part of many fruit growers’ arsenal of plants, cropping at a time when few, if any, other home-grown fruits are available.

Rhubarb has a reputation for being tough and easy to grow. Just plant it in an unloved corner and forget it. And while it is a relatively undemanding plant, there are jobs to do throughout the year to ensure consistent success.
