THE year had barely started when news of a war begun to filter in. Russia was planning to invade Ukraine and it would be a brutal, but quick battle. That was the consensus.

But the invasion that started on 24 February is showing no signs of ending as 2022 draws to a close. And as we head into the new year it seems there’ll still be many battles won and lost at a great cost to both countries – and the world.
