On this week’s deal, it appears declarer must guess which major-suit finesse to take for the ninth trick. Or does he?
West led the four of Diamonds to East’s King, and declarer immediately won the Ace. Holding up would achieve nothing and had two disadvantages. Firstly, it would advertise weakness; secondly, it would remove the diamond exit card. It was this second reason that was to prove vital to declarer’s plan.
