MAURITIAN MYSTERY
With its picturesque cove and quaint fishing village, Grand Gaube in Mauritius is the place of Instagram dreams. In January 2011, it was 27-year-old teacher Michaela McAreavey’s choice of honeymoon destination, but tragically, it also became the site of her murder.
Michaela and her new husband John checked into the Legends Hotel, now called Hotel Lux, on the Indian Ocean island. Horrifyingly, just 10 days after her wedding, Michaela disturbed a burglary in her hotel room, where she was attacked and strangled to death.
Eleven years on and her murder remains unsolved, despite a high-profile trial and John’s long-running campaign for justice, which offered a $72,000 reward for information leading to a conviction.
In 2012, two hotel cleaners were charged with Michaela’s murder, but they were acquitted by a Mauritian jury.
