Turning ideas into paintings

With a thorough grounding in draughtsmanship and technique, Mick Davies says, ‘The basis of all good work is a sound understanding and use of drawing. My way of working has not changed since I was in school. It has served me well.’ Mick relies on intuition and ideas that come to fruition as the work progresses. Although he works in a spontaneous way there is a lot of thought behind each piece. Sometimes Mick contemplates an idea for a year or two, making countless sketches, before it resolves itself in one blinding eureka moment.

‘I think about what I would like to produce and why, then endeavour to translate my ideas into a visual reality. Objects from years ago can reappear or even a useless bit of trivia can inspire a whole avenue of thought. The eye motif seems to be a recurring one
