Worth the effort!

Many years ago, I was painting outdoors in December when I noticed strange and beautiful patterns appearing in my washes as they dried. It was a few minutes before I realised they were ice crystals. I hadn't realised just how cold it was but it reminded me that painting in winter is very different to almost any other time of the year.

In the UK we are fortunate to have four clearly defined seasons but for the watercolour painter winter is arguably the best. Snow of course transforms the landscape but even without that blanket of white, the leafless trees and the damp misty atmosphere give us
