MUST-SEE, BECAUSE ROALD DAHL GETS THE PADDINGTON TREATMENT.
WONKA
DIRECTOR PAUL KING STARRING TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET, SALLY HAWKINS, OLIVIA COLMAN, ROWAN ATKINSON, KEEGAN-MICHAEL KEY, HUGH GRANT ETA 15 DECEMBER
I hope we do that character. Well, quite. Warner Bros acquired the rights to Roald Dahl’s candy magnate in 2016, and there were plenty of socialmedia grumbles in early 2021 when casting rumours were reaching fever pitch. It was understandable - origin stories of beloved characters can be pesky things, robbing iconic creations of the mystery that helped tuck them into our hearts in the first place. So given that Wonka made a point of keeping his work and personal lives separate in Dahl’s 1964 novel, and in both the 1971 film starring Gene Wilder and the 2005 movie with Johnny Depp, do we really want to meet Wonka as a young man chock-full of ideas?
