Road and track Mini

I have bought a 1980 Mini 1000 and intend to turn it into a fast road Mini which I will also use for a few track days. Due to the current economic situation my budget is now going to be limited so could you guide me on what I should prioritise regarding modification and improvement. The engine will now be the original 998 but tuned up rather than the planned 1380.

Any well set up Mini can be good fun on both road and track. Add a few modifications and that fun increases considerably. I would suggest that you start with the bodywork, making sure that the shell and the subframes are sound, then fit good front disc brakes with harder pads and alloy wheels with really good tyres.

The suspension would benefit from being lowered slightly and uprated, preferably using adjustable dampers. If you fit an easy-to-adjust damper, such as Spax or Gaz, you can easily alter the settings for road and track. A supportive driver’s seat, comfortable steering wheel, good seat belts and possibly a padded rollcage – although check with your insurer first – would be other items to consider.
