IMPSON’S TAVERN—not to be confused with Simpson’s in the Strand—at Ball Court, 38½ Cornhill, London EC3, is the oldest eating house in the Square Mile, peddling sausages and chops to City ‘gents’ since the 1750s. At the moment of writing, it has just been shut down by its landlords,). Although never exactly a Parthenon of, the Tavern is much loved for its warm atmosphere, honest cookery and long City history. To lose Simpson’s would, Athena thinks, be to lose a valuable part of London’s social history and further chip away at the distinctive character that is one of the City’s unique selling points.
