It is a truth universally acknowledged that most dog lovers in possession of a brain dislike dressing their dogs as a fashion statement. For all of Beatrix Potter's anthropomorphic stories of animals in clothes, you will not find one sartorially inclined dog. Rabbits, cats, mice, rats, pigs and foxes – yes – but the noble hound is a step too far. For conservationist Miss Potter, a dog was a companion, not a vanity project – but times have changed since The Tale of Peter Rabbit was published in 1901.

Crufts dog show in March 2023 will see thousands of dog-related products go on sale, from food to collars and luxury coats.
