THERE’S no such thing as “I can’t do maths, Miss,” or “It’s too difficult, Miss”. In Antonette Jordaan’s classroom, there’s a permanent ban on those phrases.
“ ‘Difficult’ is a swear word in my class,” she says. “If you believe something is difficult, you’ll want to stop trying. But if something is a challenge, you’ll give it a go.”
And it’s this attitude and passion for her profession that’s helped Antonette (50) become one of the leading maths teachers in the country and saw her included in the top three at the recent National Teaching Awards in Excellence in Teaching Mathematics category.
