The Great Northern Railway received tenders for the construction of the eighteen miles of Lincolnshire line between Lincoln and Honington Junction on 23rd May 1864. En route it was to pass through the parish of Caythorpe. Caythorpe Hall was the home of Col. George Hussey Packe MP, who had joined the board of what became the Great Northern Railway in 1844 and in 1847 was appointed its vice-chairman. A younger son of a notable family, he joined in the Army in 1813 and fought at the Battle of Waterloo where he was wounded, retiring from the Army eventually in 1861 as a Lieutenant-Colonel.
