AMY WRITES: Dear Karen It was about 1973 that I was told by my father that my aunt on my mother’s side was actually my grandmother.
I hadn't seen that one coming and the shock was huge.
Two years later I was given what I consider a little gem which I still have and treasure, a letter written by a distant relation, detailing all these fascinating people that I had no idea had even existed, and that's all it took.
My love for genealogy was born and I am still at it nearly 50 years later, still discovering fascinating details about various ancestors. My mother’s background wasn’t really discussed, so I concentrated on my paternal side and I feel that side of my family is well documented.
By the end of 2018 I decided to take a DNA test, and the results duly arrived. I pored over these results and was happy to see that I actually knew some of the people on my list. With a little bit of perseverance I was able to start putting my family into groups. I was quite surprised at how logical it all was.
