Many of you only think of squid as a tasty snack in a restaurant or a good winter bait. However, squid fishing is about as addictive as anything you can target as an angler in the UK. Last year I wrote about squid and cuttle fishing in general and how to target Cephalopods using Yamashita squid jigs. This time I am going to talk about the late-season monsters that appear in late autumn and early winter. Some of you may not be aware, but we have two species of squid that frequent UK waters; common squid (Alloteuthis subulata), typically up to 20cm in length, and the European squid (Loligo vulgaris), growing up to around 50cm in length. Many of us living on the south coast of the UK from Brighton to Dorset will target them from late summer, sometimes until as late as February. The big ones tend to show up late in the year, and they really provide the ultimate excitement.
