OUR GREEK ODYSSEY

Think of Greece and instantly, the image of a blue-topped church overlooking a wide bay springs to mind, along with sun-kissed, golden, sandy beaches, great food, ouzo, and occasionally, Zorba’s dance!

Well, yes, all of that does indeed exist and this is what many visitors to Greece will experience when they visit for a holiday. But Greece is so much more than that – snow, snakes, blood-red poppies, tortoises, rolling green hills, swathes of olive groves – and ski resorts, too.

Turning back time

To prove this, my wife Sally insisted that we recreate a trip to Greece that she made back in 1971 with her family in a VW T2 van. We would do it in more comfort in our VW T5 LWB Bilbo’s conversion! At least this way, the odds of us actually getting to Greece have improved, with all that modern technology.

Travelling from our home in north Wiltshire, we followed their 1971 route, but going through Albania this time. Our journey went via France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and finally Greece.

Even though we had planned our route back via Italy and France, other than deciding to take a clockwise route around Greece, this was the only plan we had. After all, we had four weeks to spend here, which should be enough time for anything we
