Get saucy

ANNERS maketh man. They sure do, but, when it comes to matters culinary, so does the ability to whip up a proper sauce. I’m being deadly serious. You may be able to battle a giant anaconda, one-handed, as you finish off cryptic crossword. Or defend that garrison from hordes of marauding infidels, using little more than a corkscrew and a copy of COUNTRY LIFE. But can you whip up a tomato sauce, using only basic cupboard ingredients? Or impress that special someone with a silken? If not, why not? Because a great sauce is an essential part of any cook’s arsenal, not so much a finishing touch as an integral part of everyday life. It adds zing and zest, succour and satisfaction, both crowning glory and final flourish. And, in the case of the classic to get it right. If you can hold a knife, chop an onion and turn on a stove, then the following five will be a cinch.
