THE RUGBY public might see an air of boring inevitability about maul tries. The odds of conceding a maul try if you concede a penalty that is kicked to the corner is about 85-90% – it’s not necessarily directly from the maul but can be within the ensuing phases. Teams are becoming much better at defending mauls but because they’ve thrown everything into it, it’s the few phases later they get caught short.
