Posed on his laden motorcycle is Canadian doctor Douglas Huestis, then a 25/26-year-old, from Montreal, with a thirst for adventure, travelling with his companion, Gene Wheeler (born 1924, of Riverside, California), a former Second World War pilot who later worked as a city planner all around the world, and was an author and publisher, sculptor, sailor and filmmaker.

Huestis was ex-services, too, having been in the Canadian army, before attending medical school. He retired
