THE POWER OF PROSECCO

JUST 25 years ago Prosecco was virtually unknown outside Italy but today the wine world loves Prosecco DOC, the entry level sparkling wine that put the Italian region on the global map. It was the party drink - often used in cocktails like bellinis, spritzes and mimosas - that became the world’s favourite affordable sparkling wine.

What was once a dirt-poor rural region became wealthy because of the popularity of its wines.

The Prosecco DOC consortium reported a 25% increase in sales in 2021, with a total of 627.5 million bottles sold around the world. Production DOCG wines, or posh prosecco, are only around 16% of that volume.
