THE KIDS HAD LEFT HOME BY THEN, TOO, SO I BEGAN THINKING ABOUT THE MG AGAIN

It’s the noise, it’s the badge but, most of all, it’s the I special combination of one of the most evocative engines with one of Britain’s most prized sports cars that makes the MGB GT V8 so desirable. For Peter Newman, an MG enthusiast who has worked with engines for most of his career, at Cosworth and Mahle, it is perhaps the ultimate pairing.

Placed in a car park overlooking Pitsford Water, in rural Northamptonshire, Peter’s MGB GT V8 looks almost as if it hasn’t driven there. Its as-new condition is striking and serves to contrast even more sharply against the few, more modern, cars nearby as well as confirming that this is, in fact, not a period photoshoot. We can dream. The car gleams in the soft light of an overcast October day and keeps the imagination alive. It comes as a surprise to hear that Peter sprayed the GT himself. In fact, he’s done almost everything himself.
