A little ray of sunshine

Peter Shaw answers the front door, takes one look at my frostbitten face and kindly asks if I could do with a coffee. Having endured a rattling 200-kilometre journey in a bitterly cold Morris 850 to reach his doorstep today, I readily accept his gracious offer. Also here in the cold is my photographer friend Max who, through chattering teeth, indicates that she wouldn’t say no to a coffee either and, with enduring politeness, “if it’s not too much trouble.”

Orders taken, Peter leads us towards his cosy kitchen, apologising for the incredible series of cracks we encounter along the hallway. We’re told he’ll attend to the crumbling plaster one day but, for now, his main priority is to create extra room for not only his existing MGs but also the exciting big Healey he’s only recently acquired. “I actually bought this place as a garage with a house attached,” Peter chuckles, while adding, “milk and sugar?”

Clutching steaming flat whites and gathered together outside once more, Peter raises the garage door to reveal the cheeky rear quarters of his bright yellow MG Midget. The little sports car may shine brightly now
