win a trial such as the Pre65 Scottish is a notable achievement in anyone’s book and there have been 22 winners in the nearly 40 years of the trial. To do it more than once is exceptional but there have been nine such riders with this achievement under their trials helmet. However those who have won it three times or more are in a much smaller club which, until the last riderHowever, as we caught the lad during weigh-in while the sun shone he still had it all to do and it wasn’t an easy event as the results show. With two riders on one mark lost it was a tie-break situation; hot on their wheels was Ben Butterworth – many times a podium placer – having two slack dabs which ensured him third. But what about Joel Gowan? First time in the trial and he’s one of the riders vying for top place, one to watch no doubt. Nor can one discount the quality of the riders in the top 10 which include another two former winners and hardly a dab between first and 10th.
